If I were a tutor, I’d start planning my schedule right now, because the odds are that I will be too busy to do so tomorrow. Tutors are mankind’s real future.
Oh, don’t look so surprised. Who would you expect to lead us into a new era? Robots?
I mean, robots are kinda cool and all, with their sci-fi look and all that artificial intelligence, aren’t they? I mean, if a thing does my chores for me then that specific thing is pretty cool in my book. Until it tries to take over the world…
Ok, I know that I am being a bit over-dramatic and, as my counselor likes to repeat day after day, “the robots are not here to bring fire and death upon us, Alex!”
But what does he know?
Let us all at least agree that the machine’s future plans are open for debate. But, even today the robots have an itch only your job can scratch.
Yep, I’ve said it. They’ve started the rout for global domination from kicking us out of our own jobs. We can’t let them win the first round.
But what chance do we have?
We can become smarter! Automation isn’t the kind of enemy you’ll want to fight heads on with your sword blazing. The robots will always have a bigger gun. Didn’t the Terminator movies teach you anything?
Can’t beat ‘em? Join ‘em!
Yep, you’ve heard me. If a robot wants your job, a robot will get your job. Just look at what happened to bowling alley pinsetters, personal assistants, and call centers – they are all automated today and this automation can even do a better job than humans can, such as in speech analytics for call centers. AI, drones, and driverless cars will take away an even bigger slice of the pie from us in the nearest future and there is nothing we can do about it except for embracing the change.
Ok, I don’t mean you should disguise yourself as a robot to sneak in for a job interview. You are to choose a different role for yourself in this brave new world.
Here’s how you do it!
“A quick rule of thumb is this: Computers excel at patterns, in linear, non-dynamic systems. Any job that is predicated on a finite, linear canon of knowledge is on the chopping block, and this means individuals in such jobs better start sowing seeds in a more creative skillset.”
Kirill Storch, CEO of Electric Web
Amazon sets up an amazing example for us. The company teaches the ways of automation without putting their employees at risk. They are doing the opposite – Amazon provides new opportunities for people now that the routine tasks are handled by bots.
Amazon’s shipment services are known all over the world due to their speed. That speed is achieved through automation. You had to be hiding under a rock for the last couple of years if you haven’t heard how great their drone division is.
We are, of course, talking about the Kiva robots. These little bad boys have automated countless processes in their warehouses but they lack the wits and creativity of a living, breathing human being. Or, in other words, they have eradicated the need for lifters, but have created new demand for managers. This, in turn, has brought an unexpected growth of both human and robot workforce by 50% in 2016, according to Forbes.
This proves that automation, if done right, is an asset. A mindset everyone at Simplybook.me follows. You simply need to automate routines like countless hours on the phone scheduling appointments or agreeing on payments. Let the robots do the stuff you hate and focus on what really matters like outstanding personal service or invention of new ways for growing your business.
Or, in simpler words, focus on the development of the skillset that will never be outdated:
- Communication
- Behavioral skills (the robots are too direct not to be awkward)
- Problem-solving capabilities
- Social skills
- Self-management and a continuous thirst for knowledge
Have fun, relax, and let the binary lifeforms take care of the rest.
What does any of this have to do with tutors?
We’ve all settled on the fact that automation is our friend. But it still takes away thousands of routine jobs people were doing earlier. All of those people will have to adapt and master new skills before entering the brave new world.
All of them will need teachers, masters, mentors, and tutors. They will need to learn more about math if they feel like programming new robots. People will discover biology, physics and all kinds of natural sciences to explore themselves and the world around them better.
Even then science is not the limit. Everyone with the abovementioned skills can and should become a tutor. We all have something cool to teach if we think about it. Personal trainers, business coaches, and inner-world gurus are also tutors in one way or the other. These people are the future.
You are the future!
